Introduction to the toolkit

Learning to become a great leader feels so overwhelming. Some questions you may have:

  • Where do I start?
  • What am I missing?
  • What is a great leader anyway?
  • Am I good leader?

With over a decade of people leadership experience, I’ve made every mistake in the book. I’ve improved a lot and I now coach other managers. Through those conversations, I developed a simple toolkit for how to become a better people leader.

I'm sure it can help you as well, here's a quick introduction to the 5 Relationships framework.

Overview

The are 5 important relationships every manager should master. It's easy to overlook the importance of these very simple interactions. Create the time for you to review how you're doing across each relationship.

Your relationship with

  1. Self

    • Before diving into the relationships that involve others, it's important to take time and reflect on your own approach to management.
  2. You and each direct report

    • This is the most crucial relationship. It's important to make it clear to your people that you're actively working to develop their career.
  3. You and the team

    • You need to set a vision for where your team is going and define success for them.
  4. The team and the organization

    • Your team does great work and it's important for others to know that.
  5. You and your manager

    • Your manager is busy. Figure out how you can make their life easier and take control of your own career.

And thats it! I use this high level framework to push leaders to think about their impact. Almost all of my advice has one of these relationships at it's core.
